** Update **

Please read my book review of 12 Weeks in Thailand: The Good Life on the Cheap.  I highly suggest getting a copy as the author goes into much more detail in terms of planning and preparing for your trip to Thailand.  Some of the tips listed on my site are from the author.

  1. Get traveler’s insurance – I use http://www.travelguard.com
  2. Get tourist visa if staying for longer than 30 days –  http://thaiconsulnewyork.com/english/index.php
  3. Register with US Embassy so they know where you are in case of emergency – https://step.state.gov/step
  4. Check US State Dept for Thailand advisories –  http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1040.html
  5. Setup “code words” with your friends and family so it discreetly signals “trouble” if you get in contact with them.
  6. Check to see if your health insurance is accepted internationally.  Blue Shield Blue Cross have a website – http://www.bcbs.com/already-a-member/traveling-outside-of-the.html
  7. Check CDC website for health information/ diseases in Thailand – http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/thailand.htm
  8. Get pharmacy scripts filled
  9. Get travelers checks and exchange baht at local bank
  10. Call your bank and let them know you’ll be traveling so they don’t shut down your credit card.
  11. Make color copy of passport to bring with you.
  12. Get renters insurance for your apartment in case of robbery or fire.
  13. Backup home PC / laptop onto external HD and leave it at the office or give it to a friend. Make sure you encrypt it. Or upload to the cloud.
  14. Test webcam to make sure no one jacks your apartment.  I use the free service http://www.gotocamera.com
  15. Hide any valuables you are leaving behind or have a friend hold onto them.
  16. Clean out fridge and garbage, especially perishable items
  17. Change camera timezone to your destination (Thanks Michelle)
  18. Have neighbor pick up mail and give them mailbox key
  19. Give your landlord your contact information and dates of travel.  May also want to post-date next month’s rent if you won’t be around.
  20. Program air-conditioner to 76 degrees.  Keep the apartment cool during summer time.  You don’t want mold growing when you come back.
  21. Download movies onto laptop for that long-a$$ plane ride.
  22. Setup blog – A free one is http://wordpress.com
  23. Setup and test your Skype service.
  24. Cancel TV, internet, phone service
  25. Go over this list 2 or 3 times!
